Symbol Supported Text Resources:

Widgit symbol software is used to create visual resources to support the education and communication of children and adults with Learning Disabilities. The Catholic Learning Disability Network works with Widgit to make resources available as downloads from the Widgit Website. A pack is now available to support the ‘I Call You Friends’ catechetical programme. This pack can be used independently of the ICYF resource and provides a wealth of symbol supported text activities relating to Gospel stories, the liturgical year, the parish community and the sacraments.

Signing Resources:

‘Signalong’ is a sign-supporting system based on British Sign Language designed to help children and adults with communication difficulties, mostly those with learning disabilities, autism and other special needs.

Makaton is a unique language programme offering a structured multi-modal approach using signs and symbols for the teaching of communication, language and literacy skills. ‘Churches For All’ is a partnership of UK Christian disability organizations which aims to help Churches create and sustain an environment where disabled people can participate in Church life for the benefit of all. It works in partnership with Causeway Prospects, Torch, Go Sign, Through the Roof, Liveability, Open ears and Mind and Soul. ‘Prospects’ (formerly Causeway) is a dynamic Christian organization working together with people with learning disabilities so they live life to the full. ‘Through the Roof’ is a national pan-disability Christian ministry seeking to ensure the good news of the Christian message is accessible to everyone. ‘Carers Together’ – for people (relatives, friends or neighbours ) who are looking after or concerned about another person. This may be because they are old or frail, have a disability, have a long or short –term health condition, or are isolated or struggling to cope. People can share their concerns, link to other carers, find out what is available to support them or help them where to find support. ‘Catholic Deaf Association’ – an association of deaf and hearing people who support each other and promote services for deaf people, offering support to existing Diocesan services. The CDA encourages deaf people to share in the Mass and the Sacraments and to participate and share fully in the life and mission of the Church and Society.
